Completing cleaning tasks at random can be overwhelming and leave you feeling that you’ve made no progress. Go from room to room following this helpful checklist to avoid missing a spot:

  • Declutter before you clean
Tidy away as many belongings as possible and take the opportunity to donate or recycle unwanted items
  • Start up high
Remove dust and cobwebs from ceilings, light fittings, curtain poles and high shelving using your vacuum’s wand
  • Dust surfaces
Use a damp cloth or microfibre cloth to wipe tables, counters, desks, windowsills etc
  • Clean appliances and fixtures
In the kitchen, deep clean the oven, fridge, microwave etc. In the bathroom, this is the time to tackle the shower, bath, taps etc.
  • Doors, cupboards, handles, bannisters and light switches
These often-overlooked areas can be some of the most-touched in our homes – wipe with a soft cloth and disinfectant
  • Windows, mirrors and glass
You can use a shop-bought cleaner or mix white vinegar and water for streak-free shine
  • Upholstery and soft furnishings
Remove sofa cushions and vacuum down the sides with your crevice tool, spot-clean to remove stains and polish wooden furniture
  • Clear floors of clutter
Don’t forget to shake out doormats and tidy away cables
  • Vacuum hard floors and carpets
Move furniture out of the way to give those rarely seen areas a well-deserved clean
  • Steam clean or mop hard floors
With loose debris and dust out of the way, now you can clean and sanitise
  • Don’t forget the skirting boards
Wipe with washing up liquid and warm water or use a disinfectant spray to remove dirt
  • Replace and replenish
Take the opportunity to replace empty toilet roll or kitchen rolls, refill empty toiletries and add items to your shopping list
  • Tick off jobs you’ve been meaning to do
Need to replace a lightbulb, test the smoke alarm batteries or repaint a radiator? Do it now while everything is clean and tidy, then tick it off your list!
