5 ways to prepare your home for spring cleaning

1. Get inspired

Cleaning and organising your home is not just about dusting, it’s about resetting your environment and creating a calm home where everything is easy to find.

2. Start under the sink

That’s right, the first place to Spring Clean is to your cleaning cupboard. There’s nothing worse than realising you’ve run out of something you need when you’re already in the swing of things.

From microfibre cloths to antibacterial spray, check your cleaning supplies before you get started. It’s out with the old, in with the new – throw away anything that’s past its best and make a note of anything that’s running low.

3. Hit the shops!

Take your list and pop to your favourite household shop to stock up on fresh-scented products. Don’t forget your reusable shopping bags! It’s not just sprays and polishes you need – don’t forget reusable cloths, natural sponges and rubber gloves if you’ll be handling harsh chemicals.

Top tip: As you work your way around your home, you’re likely to unearth jobs you’ve been meaning to do but never got around to. Stock up on lightbulbs now and you’ll be able to simple change them as you go, frustration be gone.

4. Declutter before you clean

Cleaning isn’t just about removing dust and grime. Taking the time to order your possessions can be just as satisfying and leave your home looking tidy – not to mention that decluttering your environment can help you to feel calmer.

Buddhist monk Shoukei Matsumoto explains that cleaning can benefit your mental health and is a key practice as a step towards inner peace. He says: “In Japanese Buddhism, we don’t separate a self from its environment, and cleaning expresses our respect for and sense of wholeness with the world that surrounds us.”

Top tip: Clear surfaces of unnecessary clutter, stash essential items into baskets or organisers and return misplaced items back in their rightful homes.

5. Make a date with your duster

Between work life, family time and social plans, it can seem like there are never enough hours in the day to do everything you want – let alone time to clean.

Rather than keep putting off spring cleaning until ‘later’, try making an appointment in your diary and treating it with the same importance as you would a meeting to ensure you stick to your word.

Don’t set yourself too much to do – allot a couple of hours to start with and prioritise one room or set of tasks.
